Methodological approach

Summer Drafts differs from other intercultural manifestations, putting forward a model which is alternative to both the “serious” round table dealing with problems related to issues like “living-together” (convivenza), integration and migration, and the “playful” intercultural festival that displays the expression of different cultures, often trespassing into the folkloristic and the celebration of the cultural stereotype.

Through an approach which is “serious” and “playful” at the same time, the artists involved in Summer Drafts propose ways of exploring forms of sociality that are transversal to the different cultural identities present on a territory.

The project

Summer Drafts consist in a series of workshops and events led by international artists interested in processes of participation and organization.

The artists will work together with a group of participants: Italians, German, and others from different “cultural-linguistic” groups present in Bolzano. Beside the workshops involving the participation of this “intercultural” group, Summer Drafts offers encounters open to the public and workshops with a specific target.

Associations of Bolzano working with migrants on the territory are involved in Summer Drafts with a role of mediation between the artists and the local context. Some of them are collaborating together with the artist in the preparation of the workshops.

Common thread of the meetings is the “topic” of “informal spaces”, spaces of encounter that are not institutionally regulated, and do not presuppose a predetermined physical structure, but are rather constituted through the coming together of people.

Using artistic competences at the level of everyday experience and away from logics of representation, Summer Drafts intends to deal with complexities generated through the presence of different cultural groups on a specific territory, offering a platform for exchanges and collaborations amongst the different parts involved.

Activities

Summer Drafts offers both events open to the public and workshops for an intercultural group of participants, beside others with a specific target (for intercultural social workers and youth workshops). Workshops, encounters, events will take place both at Lungomare and around the city of Bolzano. Summer Drafts will open on Sunday the 20th of July with a presentation of the anthropologist Franco La Cecla who will introduce his last book Contro l’architettura, building a relation with Summer Drafts and the thematic of informal spaces. In the afternoon the artists’ collective UNWETTER will prepare a discursive picnic open to the public that will function as an initial moment of aggregation through the participation of the different associations and artists involved in the project. The next day, Franco La Cecla will lead a workshop for intercultural social workers. The workshop has been organized to offer a service to the associations involved into the project, but it is open to other workers in the social field. The following weekend is entrusted to Amy Plant, who will prepare a workshop on informal learning together with the association Giant-Bi. During three weeks, the Committee for Radical Diplomacy will institute in Bolzano a sort of lost/found agency, an itinerant office to reactivate lost competences, passions and desires (or to help getting rid of the undesired ones). The office will close with a workshop on “missing, loosing and getting rid of something” on the third weekend of Summer Drafts. For the closing event of the project the artist Hiwa K will prepare, together with the participants, a dish that will translate into food some of the issues emerged during the four weeks of the project: connected via skype, Hiwa will cook together with his mother in Iraq, and also with the other artists of Summer Drafts and with people who took part in the project but on that day will be outside Bolzano.

Furthermore, Summer Drafts proposes public presentations of the work of Amy Plant and the Committee for Radical Diplomacy, and, with these same artists, two youth workshops involving both the Youth Centres and the refugees centres of Bolzano (CPA and ex-Gorio).

Finally, every Sunday from 9 pm to 10.30 pm for the length of the project, artists, associations and guests will present their ideas and discuss Summer Drafts at Radio Tandem, the free radio of Bolzano, as part of the program Mi Tierra! conducted by the association Latinoamerica y su gente.

Approccio metodologico

Summer Drafts si differenzia da altre manifestazioni interculturali, proponendo un modello alternativo sia a quello “serio” della tavola rotonda che affronta problemi legati a convivenza, integrazione e migrazione, sia a quello “ludico” del festival interculturale che mette in scena espressioni di culture diverse, sconfinando spesso nel folklore e nella celebrazione dello stereotipo culturale.

Gli artisti coinvolti in Summer Drafts propongono metodologie che, attraverso una creatività legata all’esperienza quotidiana, fanno emergere e affrontano urgenze, complessità e problematiche diverse, e che si offrono come forme di socialità trasversali alle diverse identità presenti su un territorio.

Il progetto

Summer Drafts consiste in una serie di laboratori ed eventi interculturali guidati da artisti internazionali che si occupano di metodologie di partecipazione e organizzazione.

Gli artisti lavoreranno con un nucleo di partecipanti italiani, tedeschi, ladini e di vari altri gruppi “linguistico-culturali” presenti a Bolzano. A fianco a laboratori che vedono la partecipazione di questo gruppo interculturale di lavoro, Summer Drafts offre incontri aperti al pubblico e workshops con target specifico.

Prendono parte a Summer Drafts, con un ruolo di mediazione tra gli artisti e la realtà locale, associazioni di Bolzano che lavorano con “minoranze” presenti sul territorio.

Filo conduttore degli incontri sarà la tematica degli “spazi informali”, spazi di incontro non regolamentati istituzionalmente, che non presuppongono una forma fisica predeterminata, e si costituiscono attraverso l’aggregarsi delle persone.

Utilizzando competenze e metodologie artistiche su un livello esperienziale del quotidiano, e quindi fuori da logiche di rappresentazione, Summer Drafts si propone di affrontare complessità legate alla presenza di diversi gruppi culturali su un territorio specifico, e si offre come piattaforma per uno scambio e una collaborazione durevoli tra le diverse parti coinvolte.

Sviluppo del progetto e attività

Summer Drafts si compone di appuntamenti aperti al pubblico e di workshop pensati per un gruppo interculturale di lavoro, oltre che di laboratori con un target specifico. Gli incontri avranno luogo sia a Lungomare che nel tessuto urbano di Bolzano. Summer Drafts si apre domenica 20 luglio con una presentazione dell’antropologo Franco La Cecla che introdurrà il suo ultimo libro Contro l’architettura e si ricollegherà a Summer Drafts discutendo la tematica degli spazi informali. Nel pomeriggio il collettivo di artisti berlinese UNWETTER preparerà un “picnic discorsivo” aperto al pubblico che funzionerà come momento di aggregazione iniziale al quale parteciperanno le varie associazioni e i vari artisti coinvolti nel progetto. Il giorno successivo Franco La Cecla guiderà un workshop per operatori sociali e mediatori culturali, pensato per offrire un servizio utile alle associazioni coinvolte, ma aperto anche ad altri operatori del settore. Il fine settimana successivo sarà affidato ad Amy Plant, che preparerà un workshop assieme a Giant-Bi utilizzando dinamiche di apprendimento connesse all’informal learning. Il Committee for Radical Diplomacy per tre settimane a Bolzano istituirà una sorta di “ufficio desideri smarriti”, agenzia itinerante che avrà la funzione di riattivare capacità e desideri smarriti (o che al contrario aiuterà a sbarazzarsi di quelli presenti), e che chiuderà in un incontro durante il terzo fine settimana di Summer Drafts. Per l’evento conclusivo del progetto l’artista Hiwa K preparerà assieme ai partecipanti un piatto che tradurrà in cibo le tematiche emerse durante le quattro settimane: collegandosi via skype, Hiwa cucinerà assieme alla madre in Iraq, e assieme anche agli altri artisti di Summer Drafts e ad altre persone che hanno partecipato al progetto e che in quella data si trovano fuori Bolzano.

Summer Drafts propone inoltre una presentazione serale a Lungomare del lavoro di Amy Plant e del Committee for Radical Diplomacy, e, sempre con gli stessi artisti, due workshop per ragazzi che coinvolgeranno sia i Centri Giovani che i “centri profughi” di Bolzano (CPA e ex-Gorio)

Ogni domenica sera dalle 21 alle 22.30 per la durata del progetto, all’interno del programma Mi Tierra! condotto da Latinoamerica y su gente su Radio Tandem, artisti, associazioni e ospiti presenteranno le loro idee e parleranno dell’esperienza di Summer Drafts.

Infine, un appunto sul titolo del progetto: “drafts” significa sia abbozzo che corrente d’aria, e “summer drafts” può essere quindi letto sia come “correnti d’aria estive” che come “abbozzi estivi”. In entrambi i casi il titolo fa riferimento ai lavori degli artisti, che sono abbozzi, ovvero proposte, che è necessario siano sviluppate insieme ai partecipanti, e che possono anche essere intese come ventate d’aria fresca in un’estate calda.

Methodologischer Ansatz

Das Projekt Summer Drafts unterscheidet sich von anderen interkulturellen Veranstaltungen, indem es ein alternatives Modell für „zwischenmenschliche“ Kommunikation vorschlägt. Summer Drafts möchte weder eine ernste Tafelrunde sein, welche sich mit Problemen des Zusammenlebens und der Migration auseinandersetzt, noch ein „glänzendes“, interkulturelles Festival, welches Ausdrucksweisen unterschiedlicher Kulturen inszeniert und oft in Folklore und kulturellen Stereotypen endet. Die zu Summer Drafts eingeladenen Künstler schlagen Denkansätze vor, die Dringlichkeiten, Komplexitäten, und unterschiedliche Problematiken ansprechen, um sich mit diesen real in Zusammenhang zu setzen. Die künstlerischen Ansätze basieren auf einer Arbeitsweise, die alltägliche Handlungen hinterfragen und thematisieren, um transversale Denkansätze für die Integration unterschiedlichen Identitäten einer Region zu finden.

Das Projekt

Summer Drafts sind eine Serie von Workshops, Diskussionen und interkulturellen Events, die von internationalen Künstlern und Theoretikern geleitet werden, die sich mit unterschiedlichen Arten von Beteiligung und Selbstorganisation beschäftigen.

Struktur des Projektes
Die vier Künstler bzw. Künstlerkollektive arbeiten in den WORKSHOPS mit einer kleinen Gruppe italienischer, deutscher, ladinischer, und mit Teilnehmern anderer kulturellen regionalen Sprachgruppen zusammen. Neben den Workshops präsentiert Summer Drafts auch öffentliche DISKUSSIONEN zu den Arbeitsweisen der Künstler in der Galerie Lungomare, sowie ein Abendworkshop für Sozialarbeiter und interkulturelle Mediatoren mit dem Anthropologen und Stadtplaner Franco La Cecla.

Das Projekt bespielt abwechselnd öffentliche und private Räume der Stadt Bozen: Franco La Cecla spricht ZUR ERÖFFNUNG am Vormittag im Rahmen eines informellen Frühstücks in der Galerie Lungomare gemeinsam mit geladenen Gästen über sein neues Buch „Contro l’architettura“, UNWETTER organisiert am Nachmittag ein diskursives Picknick auf der Talferwiese. In der darauffolgenden Woche finden WORKSHOPS mit Amy Plant und dem Committee for Radical Diplomacy statt. Diese bearbeiten sowohl informelle Räume der Stadt, wie auch private Räumediverser interkulturellen Vereinen, wie Donne Nissà und Giant-Bi. Parallel zu den Workshops stellendie Künstler ihre Arbeiten in DISKUSSIONEN und EVENTS in der Galerie Lungomare vor. Als abschließende AKTION kocht der Künstler Hiwa K – im Skype-Austausch mit seiner Mutter im Irak– für die Besucher.

Das Projekt Summer Drafts entsteht im engen Austausch mit Vereinen aus Bozen, welche sich mit den “Minderheiten” dieser Region beschäftigen, und versucht so zwischen Künstlern und Stadtbewohnern eine effektive vermittelnde Rolle einzunehmen.

Der Leitfaden der Workshops, Diskussionen und Events ist die Thematik der “informalen Räume”. Informale Räume sind zwanglose Treffpunkte, die weder durch Einrichtungen reguliert werden, noch vorgefertigten Formen entsprechen, sondern die nur durch das Zusammenwirken der Personen bestehen.

Summer Drafts bietet Möglichkeiten und stellt Arbeitsmodelle vor, die sich mit Komplexitäten auseinandersetzten, welche entstehen, wenn unterschiedliche, kulturelle Gruppen an einem bestimmten Ort zusammenleben. Das Projekt ist somit eine Plattform für den Austausch und erprobt eine mögliche kontinuierliche Zusammenarbeit zwischen den unterschiedlichen beteiligten Sichtweisen.
